What you need to know before bringing your computer to campus
Before you arrive on campus with your desktop or laptop, you'll need to make sure you have everything you need to connect to the university's network and the Internet, including up-to-date antivirus software and other security updates.
Have up-to-date antivirus software installed on your machine. If you don't already have antivirus software, Ohio State provides free downloads and updates from its software to go website.
Install the latest operating system updates. These updates help keep you free of the latest computer viruses. Students running Microsoft XP should install SP2. For complete information and access to this free update, see the Microsoft website at this link http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/topten.mspx.
For students with Apple computers you will need to visit the Apple site to download and install the latest security updates. The site can be found at: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads.
Bring an Ethernet (network) cable, category 5 or better. You will need this cable to connect to the Internet. (Note: it is not a regular phone cord.) These cables come in different lengths so you might want to wait until you move into your room to see what length you'll need. Cables are available at most campus bookstores, computer stores, discount stores, and large home hardware stores.
Your computer must have a Network Interface Card (NIC). A NIC is a piece of hardware that is installed on your computer that allows an Ethernet connection to both the Internet and the university network. Most computers purchased within the last three years already have a network card installed.
Every room is wired with one network port per person. Therefore, you will not need to bring a wireless router. Wireless routers are not permitted in the residence halls as they may create security risks for residence hall students and for the university network.
Bring every CD that came with your computer. It is very important that you have your operating system CDs (labeled Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft XP, XP pro, etc.) as well as any other software you may have purchased in case you encounter problems and your system needs to be reinstalled.
Need more help? Beginning Sunday, September 21 (official move in day), staff from the Student Life Support Center will be available in each residence hall area (north, south, and Olentangy) to assist you. Look for students wearing t-shirts that say "Ask Me About Hooking Up". You may also call the Student Life Support Center at 2-5700 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. M-F for assistance. (Note: this service is only available to students living in university housing.)
